Talk Title: Building a Strong Mathematical Community in Your Classroom and on Your Campus

Talk Abstract:  Many students resist actively participating in math class because they lack confidence in their abilities. How can you create a low-risk environment in the math classroom to boost student success and build their confidence and participation? This talk will showcase a wide variety of ideas to build a supportive mathematical community in your classroom to encourage active student engagement in their learning. We will then extend this concept to include ideas for creating a strong sense of community among the math majors on your campus.

Talk Title: Data Science for and by Pure Mathematicians

Talk Abstract:  Consider the skills and habits of mind developed through studying pure mathematics. These – and some basic statistical techniques – are enough to address some questions of interest given a small data set. With a larger investment of time for individual learning, a healthy dose of humility, and perhaps some collaborators, people whose preparation focused on pure mathematics can produce data-based studies of interest to wide audiences. Join me for a story involving a years-long transition, a cast of dozens, some alluring marine megafauna and much serendipity as I argue for the value of all types of research for and by all types of researchers.
